Hanceville Farm
Hanceville, Alabama
FORGE collaborated with the owners of this private residence and horse farm in Hanceville, Alabama to develop an overall design and long-term management plan for 78 acres of forest, wetlands, meadows, and pastures.
The phase one design included garden areas and outdoor spaces at the residence, a grove of oak trees, riding areas, and the transformation of pasture to bio-diverse meadow areas. The long term plan focuses on three main issues – biodiversity, invasive species management, and improved water quality – with the primary goal of maximizing ecological health and habitat value.
The design reduces mowing across the property, especially at the water’s edge, where plantings filter water before it reaches wetland and pond areas. The terracing of an existing steep slope adjacent to the kitchen and dining area further slows water while providing a manicured space for gathering. Upland and wet meadow areas allow deep rooting grasses and forbes to hold soil in place and sink carbon deep into the soil profile. The replacement of lawn with meadow in these areas adds a sense of lush fertility against which the strong architecture of paths, walls, docks, and riding areas is legible.
